How to add a voice-over to a video
Narration turns a series of clips into a story. You can record it directly over your edit, without a separate audio app.
Recording
- Put your clips on the timeline and move the playhead to where the narration should start.
- Open the Audio tab and click Record voice-over. Allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- The video plays while you speak, so you can time your words to the picture. Click Stop recording when you're done.
- The recording lands on an audio track at the point where you started. Trim or split it like any other clip.
Use headphones while recording so the video's sound doesn't leak into the microphone.
Balancing voice and music
- Lower the music: select the music clip and set Volume to around 15–25% under speech.
- Fade music in and out with Audio fade in/out so it never starts or stops abruptly.
- Mute the camera audio if it competes with your voice: select the video and tick Mute this clip, or use Detach audio to keep it on its own track and lower it.
Better-sounding recordings
- Record in a small room with soft furnishings; avoid bare walls and kitchens.
- Keep the microphone a hand's width from your mouth and slightly to the side to reduce breath noise.
- Write a short script, then read it as if you're telling a friend.
- Leave a second of silence at the start; it's easy to trim and avoids clipping your first word.
