How to remove a green screen background online, for free
Chroma keying makes one colour transparent so you can place yourself in front of any background. Here's how to do it in your browser without paid software.
What you need
- Footage shot against a single, evenly lit colour. Green is most common because it's far from skin tones; use blue if your subject wears green.
- A background: a video, a photo, or even a plain colour.
Step by step
1. Put the background on the bottom track
In the editor, import your background and click it to add it to the main Video track.
2. Put the green-screen clip above it
Drag the green-screen clip onto the Overlay track. Anything on a higher track is drawn on top.
3. Turn on chroma key
Select the overlay clip. In the Inspector, open Chroma key (green screen) and switch on Remove background colour.
4. Match the colour, then fine-tune
Set Key colour to your screen colour. Raise Strength until the screen disappears, then stop before parts of your subject start to vanish. Add a little Edge softness to smooth hair and outlines. Lumnexvideoeditor automatically reduces green spill on the edges.
5. Position and export
Drag the subject in the preview to place it, scale it with the Inspector, then click Export.
Getting a clean key
- Light the screen evenly. Shadows and wrinkles create darker patches that are harder to remove.
- Keep distance between the subject and the screen to avoid coloured light bouncing onto them.
- Avoid motion blur: a faster shutter speed gives crisper edges.
- Match the lighting direction of your background so the composite looks believable.
