How to add transitions between video clips
A transition controls how one shot hands over to the next. Used well, it sets rhythm; overused, it looks amateur. Here's how to add one and when to use each type.
Adding a transition
- Place two clips next to each other on the same track, with no gap. Snapping (the magnet button) makes this easy.
- Select the second clip: the transition plays as it comes in.
- Open the Transitions tab on the left and click a style. A small marker appears at the start of the clip on the timeline.
- Change the length under Animation → Transition duration in the Inspector. 0.4–0.8 seconds suits most edits.
Which transition when?
| Transition | Best for |
|---|---|
| Dissolve | Passing time, a calm mood, montages. |
| Dip to black | Ending a scene or chapter; a strong pause. |
| Dip to white | Flashbacks, dreamy or upbeat moments. |
| Slide / Push | Energetic social videos, lists, "next tip" moments. |
| Wipe / Circle | Playful reveals, before-and-after comparisons. |
| Zoom / Blur | Fast-paced edits synced to the beat. |
Tips
- Most cuts need no transition. A straight cut is invisible; save transitions for changes of place, time or mood.
- Pick one or two styles per video so it feels consistent.
- Cut on the beat. Place the start of the incoming clip on a beat in your music for transitions that feel intentional.
- For titles and stickers, use In/Out animations instead of transitions.
